What is Flame Retardant Modified Acrylic Fiber?

l   Conventional acrylic fiber (polyacrylonitrile fiber): Highly flammable with a limiting oxygen index (LOI) of merely around 17%. It emits heavy smoke and toxic fumes upon combustion.

l   Flame retardant modified acrylic fiber: Produced by copolymerizing acrylonitrile monomers with vinyl compounds containing flame retardant elements (e.g., vinyl chloride, vinylidene chloride) during the polymerization stage. Through this chemical modification, flame retardant elements are permanently bonded to the fiber molecular chains, delivering long-lasting, stable flame retardancy.

Copolymer Modification Classification

Based on different comonomers, the fibers fall into two main categories:

  1. Modacrylic fiber: Copolymerized with vinyl chloride or vinylidene chloride

  2. Vinylidene chloride-acrylic fiber: A specific variant copolymerized solely with vinylidene chloride

Core Flame Retardant Properties & Mechanism

1.    High Limiting Oxygen Index (LOI)

o    Standard grade: LOI ranging from 28 to 30

o    High-performance flame retardant grade: LOI reaching 30 to 34

2.    Superior Combustion Performance

The fiber does not melt, shrink or produce molten drips when exposed to flame; it only carbonizes. This feature effectively prevents secondary burns caused by molten drips.

3.    Low Smoke & Low Toxicity

It generates minimal smoke during combustion. Many variants adopt halogen-free flame retardant systems with low toxic gas emission.

4.    Flame Retardant Mechanism

Its flame resistance stems from its unique chemical structure. Upon heating, the fiber undergoes cyclization, crosslinking and chelation reactions that absorb substantial heat. A dense char layer forms on the fiber surface, isolating oxygen and heat transfer to halt combustion.

Additional Outstanding Characteristics

1.    Soft Hand Feel: Boasts wool-like softness, natural touch and excellent bulkiness

2.    Excellent Dyeability: Produces vivid, rich shades and supports versatile coloration

3.    Great Chemical Stability: Resistant to acids, alkalis and common chemical reagents

4.    Extra Functional Features: Certain grades deliver outstanding UV resistance and thermal insulation

Application & Care Instructions for Products

1.    Washing: Use water temperature below 40°C with neutral or weakly alkaline detergents; avoid strong alkalis. Wash gently without hard wringing or twisting.

2.    Drying: Keep dryer temperature under 80°C.

3.    Ironing: Use low heat setting (max 110°C); do not press the same spot for prolonged periods.

4.    Storage: Store in a dry, well-ventilated area away from moisture and grease contamination.
